Hello everyone,
Today I will write about five local opportunities.
1. The
first problem is from the independent Florida Alligator newspaper that was
issued on Thursday May 19, 2016.
· The
title of the article is “Unknown man hits student”
· The
link to the article is http://www.alligator.org/news/article_cccb26c8-1d7d-11e6-9dc4-87a883ae22c8.html
· The
description of the story basically is that an aggressive man, unknown to the
victim Zachary Taylor (UF student), had an argument with Taylor over who would
go to the bathroom first. The assailant wanted his girlfriend to cut in line
and take Taylor spot. The two argued, but in the video footage it is clear that
Taylor was very civilized and did not want confrontational action. The suspect
then goes on to punch Taylor twice, the second blow knocking Taylor
unconscious. The suspect then is seen to leave the scene. As a result, Taylor
was hospitalized and medically withdrew from his summer classes. He hopes to
find the attacker and press charges.
· The
main problem seems to be the mixture of alcohol and testosterone. In the video
the setting seems to be a bar. Whenever alcohol is involved there is bound to
be a problem that can lead to violence.
· The
person who has the problem is the victim Zachery Taylor. Taylor was just
minding his own business when the aggressive male started to harass him and
untimely assault him.
2. The
following article is also from from the independent Florida Alligator newspaper
that was issued on Thursday May 19, 2016.
· The
title of the next article is “Federal guidance on bathroom”
· The
link to the article is http://www.alligator.org/national/article_f176f15e-1d7e-11e6-bf79-6f7c9c4228bb.html
· The description
of this story revolves around the issue that is currently happening right now
in society. The issue is the hatred among the trans-gender community. Basically
any federally funded program must follow Title IX of the Education Amendment of
1972 which basically states that prohibits discrimination with based on sex. In
this article, UF defends the amendment and states that North Carolina should
learn to respect others as well. People should learn the true source of the
problem.
· The problem
presented in this story was that UF recognizes that states need to respect
people of all genders and sexes. Their life choices should not be liable to
discrimination. The problem is not bathrooms, but hatred and discrimination.
· The people
who are being targeted or who have the problem are transgender. They are being discriminated by not being able
to use the bathrooms of their choice.
3. The
following article is also from from the independent Florida Alligator newspaper
that was issued on Thursday May 19, 2016.
· The
title of the next article is “UF supports suit claims SG is ‘not real Florida
government’ “
· The
link to the article is http://www.alligator.org/news/article_80921774-1d7f-11e6-abb5-abe5ecd7a125.html
· The
description of the story revolves around the fact that the Board of Trustee
form all 12 Florida public universities are belittling the Student Government
(SG) institution. They are doing this by claiming that SG is only “mock
democracies” and a learning experience. This means that the Board doesn’t respect
SG as an institution.
· The
main problem of this story was that a student named Justin Bruno won the
Florida A&M University (FAMU) Student Body election, but faced scrutiny for
election violations. The Student Supreme Court called for reelection and the
University upheld that decision. Bruno felt it was a violation of hos rights
and sued. Then the Board of Trustees claimed that it was a right and not a
privilege and did not take Bruno seriously.
· The
person/ people who have the problem are both Bruno and anyone involved in Student
Government (SG). Bruno for the election scandal and call for reelection and the
people involved in SG. The Board of Trustees belittled the institution and basically
said that SG is not that important.
4. The
following article is also from from the independent Florida Alligator newspaper
that was issued on Thursday May 19, 2016.
· The title
of this article is called “Service dogs to receive eye exams”
· The
link to the article is http://www.alligator.org/news/article_999dcd12-1d7a-11e6-88f1-bfacdafeece9.html
· The
description of the story is pretty straight forward. It is promoting the event
held by UF Small Animal Hospital that will provide free eye exams to therapy
and service dogs. The story mentions how it is vital for these dogs to be in
the best condition to be able to preform at their maximum potential. A wide
range of people depend on these dogs, from people with disabilities, mental/physical
illness, and even law enforcement. This event is a great way to give back to
the community and the dogs that provide so much help for others.
· The main
problem was that over the years many service and therapy dogs may or may not be
in the best condition. UF Small Animal Hospital realized this and wants to
provide a service for the many dogs that selflessly help other. The main focus
is on the eyes of dogs. This aside form their scent is one of the many
important features that help these dogs preform their jobs.
· The
dogs are the ones who have a problem in this story. Nearly thirty dogs are being
registered to be checked up one. Some may be perfectly fine other not, but it
never hurt to examine especially since its free. The main dog in this story, Amber,
helps assist Sergeant Ellen Duffy sweep for explosive in campus. This service
will check to see if Amber is at her best so she can

Hi Juan,
ReplyDeleteThe local opportunities that you found were all very interesting! I cannot believe that a professor and a father hid a camera inside a fourteen year old closet, this is just unbelievable. Also, I like the idea of UF Small Animal Hospital are providing eye exams to service dogs. Service dogs are very important resources for anyone who are in need of one and the service dogs should be at their best conditions. Here is the link to the local opportunities that I found: http://yessiblogging.blogspot.com/2016/05/identifying-local-opportunities.html
Juan,
ReplyDeleteYour articles and descriptions were great! Good job!
Juan,
ReplyDeleteAll the articles you selected were great. I am an online student in South Florida so reading these articles about what happens on campus is pretty interested. The last article about the professor was disturbing. I have two daughters of my own and reading stuff like that really gets me upset. I appreciate you sharing these with us and good work.

Juan, that sucks for Zachary Taylor. I was also reading into the whole deal about transgendered and which bathroom to choose and a similar thing happened in north central Florida, where a county decided that transgenders were not allowed to use the bathroom they identify with. I think it's going to take a while before everyone with outdated beliefs catches up.
ReplyDeleteJuan,
ReplyDeleteI'm currently taking this class at home in Sarasota and had forgotten about the types of stories that can be read from the Alligator. However sad or bizarre these articles may be they definitely provide opportunities within our school's community. While I never finished this assignment for myself, I did research within my own local community and found some similar stories. Unfortunately violence seems to be a common theme in counties with a lower income demographic. Perhaps we both can look into these respective problems and find an opportunity that may benefit the Gainesville and Bradenton/Sarasota areas.
