1) Your beginning point
I
do believe that there is an opportunity when it comes to living
conditions.
2) Describe your belief
I believe
that there is an unmet need to feel comfortable where you are living. I live in
this apartment complex where there exist many problems that make me feel
uncomfortable to live, but can’t do anything because of the lengthily 12-month
lease contracts. The target audience would be college students here in
Gainesville who are from out of town and rent/ room in apartments here in
Gainesville. This need has always existed. Since moving away to college brings
you out of your hometown and even comfort zone, some thing will arise in new
living conditions that will make people feel uncomfortable where they are
living now. There are several things that make other feel uncomfortable about
heir living conditions. The one that mostly all students do is tell their
apartment or leasing company that there exist things that make them feel
uncomfortable and hope that the company resolves this problem. Most of the time
it is resolved, but some times things still remain. I am 100% sure that an
opportunity exists to try to resolve these unmet needs of people. By talking to
people I will be able to get information as to what makes them feel
uncomfortable and possibly try to solve this issue.
3) Identifying the Prototypical Customer and Interviewing

4)
Reflect
What I learned from this assignment
was that many people do not feel comfortable in their homes. Even though they
are not living there for the longest time, they should feel comfortable and
safe where they live. What I found to be the most surprising was Alan’s interview
where he said that because of the living conditions, he got injured. He even
had to be hospitalized and get medications.
5) Summarize
How much
of your original opportunity is still there?
The
opportunity to make people feel
more comfortable where they live is still there. Unfortunately, some things are
out of my control and sadly out of the control of the student.
Do you believe that your
new opportunity is more accurate than when you started?
I believe that my original opportunity is still
pretty viable and can be still done. The thing is that the students are only
bale to do so much.
How much do you think
entrepreneurs should 'adapt' their opportunities based on customer feedback?
(In other words, is there a trade-off between adapting and staying firm?)
I believe
that entrepreneurs should have the ability to adapt but with certain limitations.
Obviously entrepreneurs should try to please the customer but staying firm and believing
in intuitions and your gut feeling is also important.
Hi Juan,
ReplyDeleteI also believe that there is an opportunity for students who are living in apartments but do not feel comfortable in their shared space. I am currently living an apartment with three other roommates for the first time and I do not feel comfortable, even though I have my own bedroom. I thought living off campus will be better than living in dorms, but surprisingly I miss living in a dorm with my friend. Unfortunately, I did not complete the “Forming An Opportunity Belief” assignment, but here is the link of the local opportunities that I found: http://yessiblogging.blogspot.com/2016/05/identifying-local-opportunities.html
Juan,
ReplyDeleteNo one should feel uncomfortable in their own home whether it's an apartment you rent or not. If this the case however then yes there is absolutely an unmet need. A 12 month lease is a really long time but unfortunately a lot of times there is no other option. I think that one solution to this problem would be for landlord to start offering shorter lease terms such as 6 months. Things are already hard enough when you have to move away, you shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable too.
Juan
ReplyDeleteThis blog post was interesting. I have never had to live in an apartment complex or with a roommate, but I can see how there can be certain uncomfortable situations living in such close proximity with other people. This unmet need, I believe also applies even to me living in a single family home and feeling uncomfortable with my neighbors. I have a neighbor who is up at all times of the night drinking and causing a ruckus. The police have been to his house many times throughout the year and I can’t wait until either he gets out of the neighborhood or I move!

Juan,
ReplyDeleteI would definitely be interested in something like this if I was still living with roommates. I think this would be successful in college towns. I look forward to seeing how this will develop. Great job! Loved the interviews.
Juan,
ReplyDeleteI can relate pretty closely with the opportunity you have come up with. As someone who moved to Gainesville after high school graduation I was forced to move into unfamiliar apartments and houses. There is definitely a need to feel at home when living in your new home. I have lived in my fraternity house for two years but our organization technically does not own the house itself. Therefore we have no control over what maintenance can be done. Over summers many of the guys, myself included, complained about our A/C unit always malfunctioning. The corporation that owned the house would rarely listen to us and hire people to fix the problem. I hope throughout this course you continue to look more into this large problem many of us experience in Gainesville.
Hey Juan,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good idea to pursue. Not only is the area perfect for investigating the problem, it is essential. One of our basic needs as humans is having shelter. If we feel uncomfortable in our shelter, we do everything that we can to make it better for us. If you were to find some way to help make things more comfortable for students living in Gainesville, I am sure that your product would do very well.
